The Department of Student Services, Office of Special Education’s Literacy Team has identified and funded training a scientifically, research-based reading instruction (SBRI) professional development resource - Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). The LETRS professional development program addresses each component of reading instruction: phoneme awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, and word study; oral language development; vocabulary; reading fluency; comprehension; and writing --- but more importantly, it emphasizes the foundational concepts of language and reading development that link them all. The LETRS modules use professional development methods successful with diverse groups of teachers – regular classroom and special education, novice and expert, as well as urban. These instructional approaches are aligned with current brain research in reading and dyslexia. These groups of identified instructional approaches have been proven through SBRI to be effective instructional approaches for teaching struggling readers.
